About The Fellowship
Pre-Med students, during their undergraduate years, do not have many opportunities to fully engage and observe in clinical and research projects in medicine. This fellowship was designed to address that void.
The BronxCare Orthopaedics Summer Fellowship started in 2015 with 4 students. We have now grown to accept 8-12 students a summer. Everything is centered around the student experience. While you will be in the Department of Orthopaedics, a field you may or may not know you want to go into, the fellowship focuses on many general aspects of being a doctor. In fact, most of our graduates have entered medical school and chosen a variety of fields of interests.
Please be advised that the application process closes 11/25/24 at 5 PM
Here is information on various aspects about the fellowship:
Your Schedule
Generally, the schedule is 9-5 Monday through Friday. The only time this changes is if you are observing a late operation and choose to stay to its conclusion. For the first 2 weeks, you will be scheduled by the fellowship faculty. After that, you will customize your schedule based on your interests.
Observership
A central aspect of the program is what we refer to as “engagement observership.” During the clinic hours where we see patients in the outpatient setting or in the operating room the faculty will engage you with the care of the patient (in the operating room you will be in the room but not scrubbed in, of course). During the first two weeks, all your scheduled sessions will be in clinic or the operating room, rotating through the multiple specialties of orthopaedics—trauma, joint replacement, hand, foot and ankle, joint replacement, spine, and general primary care orthopaedics.
Research
We are proud of our summer fellowship research program. We focus on questions and issues related to the inner-city safety net hospitals and have a variety of clinical research projects available to the entire group of fellows. We have been fortunate not only to complete at least 2 research projects per summer, but we have all presented these at national medical meetings and some have been published in peer-reviewed journals.
Cadaver Lab
Each year, the entire summer fellowship group participates in full day cadaver dissection year of upper and lower extremities. BronxCare Orthopaedics arranges the site in Manhattan reserved just for the summer fellows. Prior to the cadaver lab, we have lectures preparing everyone for this day.
Suture Class
The Vice Chair of the department, Dr. Sepideh Baghian, runs a comprehensive suture lab where the students are given their own fully stocked suture kit and taught a variety of suture techniques.
Arthroscopy Training Lab
Arthroscopy is one of the most common procedures in orthopaedics. To gain insight into this important technique, we have a full day of simulation training with real arthroscopy equipment.
Virtual Reality Anatomy and Procedures
The department has a license for the virtual reality program PrecisionOS. Using Meta Quest VR goggles, you will be able to learn more anatomy and hone your virtual operative skills on its many training modules.
Medical Device Company Tour
A highlight each summer, the Stryker Corporation arranges for a full day experience at their learning center and plant. Students will learn the inner workings of the important devices (the implants we use in patients) during a full day interactive tour.
Thursday AMAA Sessions
Every Thursday, from 2 PM – 5 PM, is an interactive session with Dr. Kirschenbaum. Sometimes, other faculty will attend. AMAA stands for Ask Me Almost Anything. Most of the topics covered include health policy, the business of medicine, the nuts and bolts of interacting with patients, and more.
